
Lars Peter Laamann received his PhD in 2001, and is Senior Lecturer in History at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, and also editor of the Central Asiatic Journal. The author’s research interests focus on popular religion and healing in Qing and republican China, as well as on the creation of the welfare ideal in modern China.
A parallel field of research is Manchu studies, with the emphasis on the role of religion in Manchu/Qing society. Monographs and edited volumes: Christian Heretics in Late Imperial China: Christian Inculturation and State Control, 1720-1850 (2006); Narcotic Culture: A History of Drugs in China (2003, with Zhou Xun and Frank Dikötter).
